As we draw a close on another fantastic season on the turf, attention now turns to the all-weather campaign – and what a start it’s been. We were delighted to record back-to-back, four-and-a-half-length victories at Wolverhampton on Monday (3rd November), courtesy of two talented two-year-olds: Akirra and Bassenthwaite.
First into the winner’s enclosure was Akirra, a precocious colt who has continued to progress throughout his debut season. Showing maturity and balance, he delivered a commanding, start-to-finish lead over the five furlongs. Under the ride of Hector Crouch, he travelled smartly and quickened well on the home turn, putting an impressive distance between him and the field to extend his lead and win with plenty in hand. Having finished second on his first attempt in handicap company last time out, it was particularly pleasing to see him get his head in front in such decisive style. This colt continues to improve with each run and looks a strong, capable juvenile with an exciting future ahead. Congratulations to his owner, Ify Madueke, on a very well-deserved success.

Not to be outdone, Bassenthwaite shortly followed suit in the next race – providing a particular sense of déjà vu, as he too made all under Hector Crouch to secure a dominant victory in the Nursery Handicap. After winning his debut earlier in the season, he was narrowly beaten when stepping up to handicap company last time out. This return to winning form, with a near five-length margin, nicely proves his willingness and aptitude for racing. A terrific result for his owner, David Armstrong, and a performance that also suggests there’s more to come.
It's always especially rewarding to see such promising potential emerging from within our string of two-year-olds as the season moves on. Both colts have shown real qualities in spirit and speed – attributes that bode well as they continue their development over the winter and into their three-year-old campaigns. With exciting prospects like these, there’s plenty to look forward to in the months ahead.
