It was a triumphant result for A Bit of Spirit last week (12th June), who showed plenty of courage on his career debut to land himself in front and win by a head, in the Novice Stakes over 6½ furlongs at Newbury.
Breaking well and racing prominently, under a strong ride from Rossa Ryan, he travelled beautifully before taking on a determined contender, where we watched the pair pull clear of the field from over a furlong out. In a gripping neck-and-neck challenge, the colt showed real tenacity to battle back and regain the lead in closing strides to win gamely.
A Bit of Spirit hails from a top-class pedigree and his debut effort suggests a bright future lies ahead – especially given the way he brought class, composure and an ability to respond well under pressure to this performance. He is a colt who clearly possesses both talent and heart for racing, and we look forwards to seeing more from him with future encounters. A huge congratulations to Paul and Clare Rooney for this sharp individual.
